Help! My AC Unit Froze Up | Dalton AC & Heating | Pearland, TX

It’s counter-intuitive in the Pearland heat, but AC unit can froze up, even during the summer. The air conditioners may be frozen, but you’ll be hot. A frozen AC stops working!

What should you do when you encounter this problem? Here’s what you need to know.

Check the Outdoor Unit

The signs of freezing will be evident on the exterior AC unit. You might see frost all over the grating, ice all over the pipes, or even ice coating the entire exterior of the unit.

What you’re looking at is the refrigerant, which has gotten too cold. This usually happens when the airflow is low, when the refrigerant is leaking, when the refrigerant is low, or when you set your thermostat too low. It can also happen when you have a faulty compressor.

Troubleshooting Steps

While we don’t recommend trying to repair a frozen AC yourself, there are some troubleshooting steps you can take to try to get your unit up and running again before calling us.

One of the most effective ways to start is to turn off the AC. This will let the unit thaw. The faster you do this, the better off you’ll be.

Next, check your air filters. Poor air flow is the most likely cause of a frozen AC. This is one of the reasons why we tell all our customers to read their manufacturer instructions, to know which filters to order, and to change them regularly. Or to call us for regular filter changes, if they don’t want to deal with all of that.

If you’ve been running your thermostat at “subArctic,” then you should go ahead and turn up the thermostat at this time.

When the problem was the air filters and you don’t think anything else is wrong, you can try turning on the AC. If none of these steps fix the problem, then you’re going to need a professional HVAC technician.
