The Guide to Taking Care of Your AC When You Have Pets

We all love our furry friends, but let’s face it. Pets can play havoc with HVAC systems. After all, almost all pets shed, and that hair and pet dander can all end up in your HVAC system.

Believe it or not, pets can cause other problems as well. So what’s a devoted pet parent to do?

Stay On Top of Air Filter Replacements

You may need to replace your air filters more often than non-pet owners do. Be sure you know the regular replacement schedule, but if your AC still seems to be working a little harder than normal then you’ll want to replace them sooner.

For example, if you have a filter that normally needs a replacement every six months, you might want to consider replacing yours every three months instead.

Get All Up In Your Grille

Your vent grille, that is! You want to vacuum out your vent covers. You should even consider wiping them down with mild soap and water at least once a month.

This can get all the trapped pet hair out of your vent and out of the way. Blocked vents force your AC to work harder, which means higher energy bills and more breakdowns. The little bit of time you take to clean the vents now could be a big time and money saver later.

Break Out the Bathtub

Bathe and groom your pets regularly to reduce dander and shedding. They’ll feel better, too, even if they don’t love the bathing process itself.

Vacuum Often

The more you vacuum your home the less dander and hair will end up in your system. You should also consider cleaning your baseboards regularly, as pet hair likes to congregate there.

It’s also a good idea to wash your bedding as often as possible, especially if your pet sleeps with you.

Watch Where They Go

There’s nothing quite like making a service call in which a dog has broken the AC by, uh, marking territory right onto the AC condenser. Do your best to walk your dog as far from the outdoor unit as possible.

Schedule Tune-Ups

You’re a pet owner, so your AC system will require more TLC than the average system will. Getting your regular spring and fall tune-ups is one of the best ways to ensure that your system stays in tip top shape.

We’ll give your system a thorough check-up, and will take steps to ensure it continues to run well.
