5 Ways to Extend the Lifespan of Your AC

Replacing an AC isn’t fun. Fortunately, most central AC units will last at least 12 years when properly cared for, but some can last as long as 30 years if given sufficient TLC.

The key to reducing the number of times you will have to replace the unit is to take proper care of your air conditioning. Here are 5 ways to ensure your AC remains in tip-top shape.

#1) Change the Filters

You’d be shocked to find out just how many problems a dirty air filter can cause. Often, when we are called out to a house to repair an AC, we find the unit doesn’t need a new part or a major overhaul. It just needs a filter change. Of course, if the unit doesn’t get regular filter changes, those bigger problems can easily develop.

Learn your unit’s filter schedule, stock up on the filters you need, and set a reminder in your phone until you’re able to do the job like clockwork. Future-you will thank you.

#2) Keep the Unit Clean

AC units need clean, clear airflow to work properly. Good airflow can be challenging when part of the unit is outside, where leaves, branches, and dirt tend to pile up around it. Of course, this is a bigger problem during the fall, but it can happen at any time of year.

On the day you change your filter, it might be a good idea to go outside and walk around the unit to clear debris. This single step will prevent blockages and may also prevent mold and mildew from accumulating inside the AC.

#3) Update Your Insulation

Did you know most homes in Houston have insufficient insulation? The amount of insulation building codes demand is far below the recommended insulation for a climate like ours.

When you’ve insulated your home correctly, your AC needs to use far less energy to cool each room. While the upfront cost can be significant, insulation lasts a long time, just like an AC can, and you’ll save loads of money in the long run.

#4) Don’t Go Arctic

We know. When it’s 90℉ outside, the temptation is to come inside and drop the temperature until Polar Bears are chilling in your Lazy Boy. Yet running the AC too cold can strain the unit and cause it to malfunction.

Use ceiling fans to cool your skin while keeping temperatures reasonable. See our post, Choosing the Right Thermostat Settings for All Four Seasons in Pearland, to find the perfect settings for AC longevity.

#5) Schedule Your AC Tune-Up

Healthy ACs get their annual tune-up every year. The tune-up helps tighten mechanical components, replace parts, top off fluids, and generally ensure that the AC has everything it needs to get through the hottest months without malfunctioning.

Tune-ups are relatively inexpensive. They can save you thousands of dollars. Set another one of those calendar reminders!
