How to Find the Right Filter for Your HVAC System

Here on our blog, we spend a lot of time reiterating the importance of changing your AC filters on a regular basis.

But do you know how to choose the right filters in the first place?

If you don’t, this post is for you. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know.

Find the Right Filter Size

It is imperative to find the right size for your air filter. A poorly sized filter won’t catch all of the dust and debris that you’re trying to keep out of your AC system. It may even be impossible to install the wrong filter size.

You can usually find the right size by checking your owner’s manual, but some homeowners no longer have access to that document. Fortunately, it’s generally not that hard to find the existing filter. Pull the filter and look for the size information on the frame, or measure it.

You may even luck out and find the exact brand that goes with your system, making it easy to place an order.

Choose a Pleated Filter

While pleated air filters can be more expensive, they tend to be more efficient. Pleated filters catch more dust and debris because the pleats create greater surface area to catch the contaminants.

Meet MERV

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Higher numbers indicate better filter efficiency. Yet don’t go straight for the highest number you can find. It’s possible to choose a MERV rating that’s too high for your HVAC system.

If you can’t find your manufacturer’s recommendations, stick to a MERV rating of 8 to 13 to stay on the safe side. MERV 8 filters capture up to 70% of large airborne particles. They aren’t perfect, but they’re good enough to protect most systems. If you have allergies or asthma, live in a home with pets or smokers, or have a heavily carpeted home, you might want a higher MERV rating.

HEPA filters are also available. They operate on a stricter standard. They aren’t usually appropriate for residential ACs. They’re more appropriate for air purifiers.
