Factors to Consider When Buying a New Furnace | Pearland, TX

Eventually, all heaters break down and need to be replaced.

When you have to, it helps to know what factors you should be considering when choosing your next heater. We favor American Standard heaters because these heaters “check all the boxes,” but we will never tell a customer not to do their own research.

Here are four factors you should be thinking about.

#1) Energy Efficiency

To evaluate energy efficiency, you should look at the heater’s Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. This number compares the amount of heat the heater delivers to the amount of fuel it takes to generate that heat.

The higher the AFUE, the more energy-efficient the system. That means a more comfortable home, a lower energy bill, and guilt-free heating throughout the winter season.

#2) Noise Level

Nobody wants to spend an entire season listening to a clunking, clanging heater.

Fortunately, it’s possible to evaluate the noise level of a heater before you buy. Look for the decibel (dB) rating of the heater. Most residential heating units should produce noise levels of 60 dB or less.

#3) Maintenance Needs

Most heaters shouldn’t need more than an annual tune-up combined with regular air filter changes. If you know you don’t want to change the filter every month, you might ask for a heater with a longer filter lifespan.

If your heater does require deeper maintenance, do not try to DIY it. Heaters can explode. Call us to schedule an inspection and repair instead.

#4) Warranty

A strong warranty can help you save a boatload of money if anything goes wrong with your new heater.

Consider:

  1. The warranty term, or how long the warranty lasts.
  2. The specific parts covered by the warranty. The more the better.
  3. Warranty exclusions.
  4. Registration requirements.
  5. Extended warranty options.

The American Standard heater warranty is considered to be one of the better ones in the industry. It offers 5 years of comprehensive coverage which can extend to 10 years if you register your product within 60 days of installation. While registration can be a pain, the extra five years of coverage are worth it.
